Contributions by Alexander Fleming

Alexander Fleming was a bacteriologist at St Mary's Hospital in London, where he discovered Penicilin. This is one of the most important contributions in the history of medicine and is also his greatest contribution to medical science.

The invention of the drug 'penicilin' came at the right moment for the world and was seen at that time(and even today) as a miraculous drug and also the greatest contribution to the history of medicine. One great contribution made through the invention of penicilin was the large number of lives saved during world war 2.With penicilin, many lives were saved, especially during World War 2 when the drug was invented at that time.Though the initial intention was to utilise the drug for war purposes, penicilin was eventually made available worldwide for anyone to use.

Another contribution Alexander Fleming made through the invention of the penicilin was the many diseases that could be treated with penicilin. Penicilin could be used to treat various infections such as urinary tract infections, meningitis, gonorrhea, syphilis, respiratory infections and even peumonia. The invention of peniclin was what that made it possible for all these diseases to be treated. In addition, penicilin is also used in surgeries, where it is used to prevent bacterial contamination of wounds before, during and after any surgeries.
